The safety of the people and property of Wayne County will be my top priority.
Maintain public safety / Crime prevention
I will fight to address vacancies and retain existing employees to ensure high visibility and decrease response times. Emphasis will be placed on community safety, focusing on crime prevention through high visibility, strict enforcement and public education. Additionally, deputies will actively participate with investigations of misdemeanor violations and other crimes where immediate action may lead to an arrest.
Specialized Units will carry out targeted enforcement programs in specific areas of the county that have demonstrated a need, focusing on gang and drug activity, which are primary catalysts for most crimes occurring within the county. Furthermore, these units will provide support for other sections of the Sheriff’s Office as needed, assisting with investigations, deterring criminal activity and apprehending criminals.
School Safety
I will fight for additional deputies to serve as full-time School Resource Officers in all elementary schools, not just middle and high schools. A selection process for future School Resource Officers will be implemented to ensure our schools are equipped with Resource Officers that possess the appropriate skill set for a school environment.
As a former School Resource Officer, I recognize the critical responsibilities associated with this position. While the primary objective is to ensure the protection of students and staff and enforce North Carolina laws, the role extends far beyond these duties. School Resource Officers act as mentors and role models, establishing relationships that can significantly influence a child's life. Therefore, it is essential to carefully select individuals who are well-suited to serve as School Resource Officers.
Mental illness
Mental health is an increasingly important issue for law enforcement response. It is essential that all personnel receive ongoing training to accurately identify and appropriately engage individuals experiencing mental illness or those belonging to special populations. In partnership with mental health professionals, policies and protocols will undergo continual assessments to guarantee that the Sheriff's Office employs best practices when engaging with individuals experiencing mental illness.
Sheriff Office Internal Issues
The present organizational culture is negatively charged, creating challenges that have resulted in lower morale and decreased job performance. Some areas of the agency have expectations that are difficult to meet, compounding the issues, and ultimately impacting the services provided to the residents of Wayne County. A positive law enforcement culture relies on strong leadership and a structured environment based on clear expectations, maintaining consistency and holding individuals accountable.
As a career law enforcement officer with years of leadership experience, I will provide effective leadership that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office to better protect and serve the residents of the county.
As your Sheriff, I will ensure you receive excellent law enforcement services based on the highest ethical and professional standards.
As your sheriff, I will be committed to maintaining high standards for all individuals.
in return, I anticipate that you will hold me to the same level of excellence.
