About rICKY


Ricky was born and raised in Wayne County. He graduated from Eastern Wayne High School in 1987. Ricky wrestled and played baseball in high school, lettering in both sports.

Ricky spent his summers in a tobacco field to have spending money and school clothes.

After graduation, Ricky worked at AP Parts as a welder/machine operator. In August 1993, Ricky left AP Parts and enrolled in the Basic Law Enforcement Training program at Wayne Community College.

In December 1993, Ricky graduated from Wayne Community College with his Basic Law Enforcement Certification and an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement Technology.

Ricky began his law enforcement career as a police officer with the Town of Mount Olive in December 1993, until January 1997.

In February 1997, Ricky began his career with the NC State Highway Patrol. Through hard work and his steadfast commitment to public safety, Ricky earned several promotions while with the patrol. He consistently demonstrated strong, principled leadership based on the highest ethical and professional standards.

While with the patrol, Ricky continued to pursue his education. In December 2018, Ricky graduated Summa Cum Laude from NC Wesleyan College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and was inducted into the Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma.

On 1 September 2021, Ricky retired as the Troop Commander responsible for the 14 counties that make up Troop C.

Ricky was known for his firm but fair leadership style, holding both himself and others to the highest standards.

In November 2021, Ricky was sworn in as a deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as the School Resource Officer for Rosewood High School. Ricky was promoted to Detective in July 2023. On 25 April 2025, Ricky resigned from the Sheriff’s Office in order to begin his campaign for Sheriff.

Ricky serves as a part-time adjunct Instructor for the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program at Wayne Community College.

With over 30 years of distinguished public service as a full-time law enforcement officer at both the state and local levels of government, Ricky is prepared to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to Wayne County as your next Sheriff.
